This is a presentation of a report entitled “Global Risks”. It is an annual report issued by the World Economic Forum. It tries to detect the most prominent risks threatening the world so that it may take necessary procedures to face them and stop them if possible. This is the fourteenth version of the report “Global Risks”.
The report categorizes global risks into five classes: economic, environmental, geopolitical, social and technological. Then, it arranges risks according to the occurrence. The report depends on a survey annually conducted on “Global Risks Perception”.
The report is divided into an introduction followed by an executive summary and the contents of the book. The book contains eight chapters followed by appendices. In the first chapter, the book presents the classes which generally include global risks. The second chapter discusses the effects of the change of power patterns and the divergence of values and standards and their influence on the world economy and policy. The third chapter focuses on handling risks that threaten mankind showing their psychological and emotional image. The fourth chapter concentrates on biological and environmental dangers like the outbreak of epidemics and biological weapons and their risks. Environmental risks are also handled in the fifth chapter which concentrates on the problem of sea-level rise. Chapter six ponders about future shocks which may threaten world stability and the way they can be stopped. The seventh chapter deals with various dangers which were previously handled in global risks reports for the sake of finding out the development that occurred in these risks, how they increased and the response and the way of handling them throughout the past years. The author of the report tackles topics like food security, civil community, and investment in the infrastructure. In chapter eight the author presents the visions of experts in risk studies and risk management to activate ways of thinking of dealing with the development of global risks map. Next, there is Appendix A which presents a description of each of the global risks mentioned throughout the report. It also describes the most prominent trends handled in the report. As regards Appendix B, explains the methodology of the global risks perception survey.
Generally, the report is important. It is a vital step on the way to understanding the risks which threaten our world and trying to depict them. Thus, efforts can be exerted to avoid them or treat their effects. However, the report contains some biases of knowledge and concepts.
